What should you do if the FASTag scanner machine does not read your FASTag ID?

What you need to know about the RFID toll payment system?

FASTag streamlines the toll payment process with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. The Tag is attached to the vehicle and the funds are detected from the bank account to which the Tag is linked when the vehicle passes through the FASTag scanner machine. The advantage of using RFID technology is that it automatically collects data in the FASTag scanning process, ensuring accuracy and eliminating any potential human errors.

How does the FASTag scanner work for toll payments?

Every RFID tag contains a unique ID number, embedded in an electronic microchip along with an in-built antenna. By connecting an RFID antenna to a compatible reader, the toll scanner will be able to detect any nearby Tags since the embedded antenna in the Tag will receive signals from the antenna of the reader. FASTag RFID readers collect and consolidate data, as they use radio frequency signals to identify tags associated with their corresponding information and upload that into a comprehensive database.

Why the FASTag scanner may not read the Tag ID?

If the FASTag scanner machine at a toll plaza fails to detect a FASTag on your windshield, there’s likely an issue with it. It may have been blacklisted due to inadequate balance which may just be one of the reasons for blacklisted Tags. FASTags can also be blocked due to technical glitches despite having sufficient balance or might even be a result of scanner malfunctioning. Moreover, if your FASTag becomes damaged or its validity has expired, the toll scanners will be unable to recognize the Tag.

What to do if the toll scanner does not read your FASTag ID?

If the FASTag scanner machine at a toll booth is not functioning, you may cross without paying any toll fee provided that your FASTag wallet has adequate balance and does not have any Tag related issue. However, if it is notified during the FASTag scanning process that your FASTag is either damaged or has expired, you will be liable to pay twice the toll amount in cash. In the event of the FASTag RFID reader failing to recognise your Tag due to insufficient balance you should immediately recharge the Tags and if the amount is not reflected in the wallet instantly, you will be required to pay twice the toll amount in cash.

If the FASTag is blacklisted by a law enforcement agency due to recurring violations or an incorrect Tag for a vehicle, it is important to contact the respective agents promptly and take all of the required steps to unblock the Tag. AxleTags are FASTags for commercial vehicles and if there are any Tag related issues, you can contact the customer support team to sort the issue.

Let’s Wrap Up!

FASTag operates on the  Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology with a unique ID embedded on a microchip along with in-built antenna and FASTag RFID readers to streamline toll payments. The FASTag scanner machines may sometimes not read the Tags due to inadequate balance, technical glitches, damage or a Tag that is blacklisted by law enforcement agencies because of violation of rules. During the FASTag scanning process if the Tags are not read by the toll scanner then you can cross the tolls without payment if the scanner is at fault or you have to recharge your wallet or contact your FASTag provider for Tag related issues.
